Our History

Dangote Cement is a subsidiary of Dangote Industries, which was founded by Aliko Dangote in 1981 as a trading business with an initial focus on importation of bagged cement and other commodities such as rice, sugar, flour and salt.

Over time, the Group began to import bulk cement into the Apapa and Port Harcourt terminals, which it then bagged for distribution. Through the 1990s, the Group made a strategic decision to transition from a trading based business into a fully-fledged integrated manufacturing operation. This is where our ambitious plan to become Africa’s leading cement producer began.

1992

Kogi State Government incorporates “Obajana Cement Plc” in November.

2000

Dangote Industries acquires Benue Cement Company from the Federal Government as part of its privatisation exercise. BCC operated a 0.9Mta plant in Gboko, which was subsequently upgraded by the Group to 2.8Mta.

2002

Dangote Industries acquired Obajana Cement Plc. from Kogi State Government, though no factory existed at this time.

2004

Commenced the construction of the Company’s first cement production plant (Obajana Cement Plant).

2007

Commissioned the Obajana Cement Plant with two production lines and capacity of 5 million tonnes per annum, making it the largest plant in Sub-Saharan Africa.

2010

JULY:
Name changed from Obajana Cement Plc
to Dangote Cement Plc.

SEPTEMBER:
Scheme of merger between Dangote Cement and Benue Cement Company to provide a number of strategic opportunities and benefits to the enlarged entity, shareholders, employees and customers.

OCTOBER:
Listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange following merger of DCP and BCC.

 

2011

MAY:
Dangote Industries transfers its Pan-African (non-Nigerian) cement interests to Dangote Cement.

2012

FEBRUARY
Opens Ibese plant in Ogun state, near Lagos, with 6Mta across two lines.

JUNE
Obajana increases capacity by 5Mta with the opening of Line 3.

DECEMBER
Ghana operations consolidated into DCP accounts.

2014

FEBRUARY
Delmas (South Africa) opens 1.5 Mta capacity.

AUGUST
Aganang (South Africa) opens 1.8 Mta capacity.

NOVEMBER
Ibese extends capacity by 6Mta to 12Mta.

Obajana extends capacity by 3 Mta to 13Mta.

DECEMBER
Senegal begins operations with 1.5Mta integrated plant.

2015

FEBRUARY
Cameroon begins operations with 1.5Mta grinding plant in Douala.

MAY
Ethiopia opens 2.5Mta factory in Mugher.

JUNE
Zambia opens 1.5Mta factory in Ndola.

SEPTEMBER
Dangote Cement joins the Premium Board of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.

DECEMBER
Tanzania was commissioned.

2017

New capacity commissioned in Sierra Leone (0.5Mta, import) and Congo (1.5Mta integrated).

2020

Commissioned our export terminals in Apapa and Port Harcourt and commenced clinker exports via shipping from Nigeria to West and Central Africa.

2021

Commissioned second gas fired power plant in Tanzania

Okpella Cement Plant becomes operational

2022

Commissioned alternative fuel feed systems at Obajana lines I and V; and Ibese line II.
